Why Your Garage Door Opens & Closes on Its Own

You may have arrived home to discover that your garage door is wide open and doubted yourself about having closed it. Then you do the same thing a week later, arrive home to an open garage. You then realize that something is definitely wrong and that there has to be a problem with your garage door. This is when you have to put on your thinking cap because up until now, you’ve been lucky that no one has broken into your home or stolen things from your garage. However, there is nothing that says it won’t eventually happen if it continues to occur.  

Another scenario is that you are in a hurry to leave for work and your garage door won’t open. Now you’re stuck in the garage and trying to troubleshoot at this point is not an option, you reach for the phone to call a garage door repair service. Unfortunately, they have to schedule the service call and now you have to ask someone to take you to work. This wouldn’t be a problem if you knew how to troubleshoot the situation yourself, which is what we will help you do.

We want you to be careful especially if your garage is attached to your home. Make sure that the interior door that leads into your home is always locked. We know that some people like to leave this door unlocked and if you are having problems with your garage door opening up and closing on its own, this is going to be very important to your safety and that of your family. Why It Happens 

There are a few reasons why this might occur and here are a few of them: 
Radio interference can create a problem with your garage door. It could be a radio tower, police radio or a CB radio that can interfere with your signal and causes your garage door to be affected.  

There might be a short in the circuit board and this could also cause your garage door to act strangely. This would be the same way that a short in your wall remote or standard hand held remote would create an issue with your door opening and closing. 
You may be sitting on your remote without realizing it and this could create a problem with your door opening back up. Make sure you put it someone so that you always have your eyes on your remote control when you are in the car. Some have a remote that goes directly over their visor so that they never have to remove it.  

A remote control with a weak battery can make the control send out signals triggering it to either open or close your garage door. Sometimes, it will even cause your neighbors door to open and close. Keep in mind that the same could happen to you. If your neighbor’s garage door frequency is on yours, it could cause your door to open and close again. Test your battery to see if the batteries are any good. If they are not then it is important that you change them.

If you have an older remote this could create a problem because it doesn’t hold as many programmable codes. This alone increased the chance of someone else in your area having the same frequency.  

Reprogramming your transmitter might also be necessary to stop the door from opening and closing on its own. This can be done from the remote. Press the reprogram button for a few seconds and release it once the indicator light starts blinking. When the blinking starts then press the remote button again. This is what will re-program the remote. To achieve the best results, consult the owner’s manual to make sure you know exactly how to reprogram your type of garage. Even if you don’t have the manual you can look online for an Owner’s Manual for your make and model unit. 

It might be necessary for you to change the code on the garage door opener. This is easy to do but you’ll first have to take the cover off of the remote to locate the code wheel. Choose and enter a new code wheel. Then the code within the opener will need to be changed. If you do not know how to do this then it is best that consult the manual or contact one of our qualified garage door technicians to handle it for you.
